oceanic owlis

oceanic owlis

Sometimes you just listen to something and the world stops around you for a bit. That happened when I fell for my good friend and talented Brighton musician Ozzy Ellis aka Owlis‘ new demo track..

After sending me a novel sized email containing the background to the song and an anecdote about meeting an old lady in hospital (which was actually really cute), I didn’t really know where to start on trimming it down but here’s a little bit behind the creation and my weekly hit “Oceanic”..

“So, about the song; It’s first incarnation came up a few years ago, and after a few years of obsessive tinkering … it stayed exactly the same as it began. As silly as that sounds, that has become a large part of the message. Finally being able to release a bedroom demo version of it marks a milestone of “letting go” of a lot of aches and pains.”

“Over these years there’s been a place I would climb to from which I could see the setting of my childhood. Each town, and the coastline that connected them. Nature, and views like the one I cherished keep me going. It’s like that scene in The Hobbit where Bilbo climbs the tree to scout the way, as giant spiders attack his friends below. Stealing a moment to clear your head, breath some fresh air and enjoy the view. The problems that wait can be dealt with better after that. That’s what I enjoy about this piece. It’s not a call to nihilism – There’s a lot of hope in it.”

There’s no two ways about it, if Owlis was to go forward to create more from this emotionally drained, trickling guitar land then it would become bigger than he thinks. Listen to the short but oh so sweet demo below and go support the shit out of it so we can hear more in the future yeah? Cool.

fickle friends are sticking to bangers

fickle friends are sticking to bangers

I don’t think that I’ve missed a release here on the blog from this brisk, blossoming, Brighton quintet and I’m not going to start now. Initiating us all in to the Summer months their latest single could not have come sooner..

Fickle Friends have made themselves known as the pioneers of female fronted, 80’s throwback pop. Proven by the number of people comparing them to nothing other than the new Paramore album “After Laughter”. Just a bit of a compliment ay?

“Glue” comes off the back of the Radio 1 praised and playlisted “Hello Hello” and just as you thought things couldn’t get better after that banger this track drops and excusing the never ending puns, it will be getting stuck deep into the your head, it will. The debut album can’t be that far away now but there’s one thing we know and that is that it’s going to be one of the biggest releases of the year!

Indulge yourself in this sun-doused, pop thumping single below..

welcome to weird fun

welcome to weird fun

It’s been tough getting back into the swing of finding new music that’s out there, yet to be found BUT I think I have lumbered over a San Fran homed treat and a half..

Highschoolers from the Californian state are clanging out their “soup kitchen rock” (as they like to call it) and I’m not gonna beat around any bushes when I say that this shit is good. The group consists of Mitchell Marinaro (vocals and rhythm guitar), Grace Cardinale (drums), Alex Santana (lead guitar), River Manochio (bass) and Alex Varni (“hype man”) and their quest for world domination has only just begun..

Looking like a flashback to the 90’s the band played their “Planet Weird Fun” album release show last night in an invite only, messy looking, house party. Here are some snaps from just that very exclusive party;

If these point and shoot masterpieces aren’t doing it for you then please, go ahead, listen to the catchy, garage, surf rock tidings of Weird Fun and please for the love of god remember where you heard them first yeah? Oh and keep an eye out for their debut album, it’s gon’ be good..

taking over the world with confidence

taking over the world with confidence

Having missed out on their visit to Brighton last month as part of The Great Escape line up and regretting it every day since, I have been listening to Confidence Man non-stop..

Their debut singles ‘Bubblegum’ and ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’ are complete and utter, full time, 24/7 bangers. The aussie quintet seem to be quietly going about releasing track after track of pure pop party kickstarters and it’s only a matter of time before the world begins to take notice.

UK peeps you would’ve (like me) just missed out on seeing them in the flesh BUT for the sake of being all bloggy and promoter like here’s the rest of their upcoming live dates, if you’re from Australia or The Netherlands you’re in luck!

If you listen to any new music today make sure it’s this..

ashe shines on debut

ashe shines on debut

I like it when you are just listening through all the big new releases and a newbie sneaks in and fits nice and snug, blending in. Ashe‘s new single did just that when I discovered the San Diego based babe last week..

Ashlyn Willson is surely about to kick start her pop career with the fresh sounding debut “Used To It” already with the likes of Zane Lowe swooping up and playing on Beats 1. Simple, sunny aesthetics will rocket this track to the top of your summer playlists and shoot this young lady up to join the likes of Dagny in female pop dominance this coming season..

John Mayer shares first wave of tracks from “The Search For Everything”

Stating that this new album has too many tracks to fit into one record, the first “wave” of songs has been dropped from this songwriting genius..

This man can do no wrong in my eyes so I believe that there is nothing more to be said. Just go ahead and fall completely in love with “Wave One” of  ‘The Search For Everything’ below. MAN I love this man far too much, it’s not healthy. Sorry, go on, I’ll let you listen..
